Ex Nigerian Super Eagles Football coach, Dutchman Clemens Westerhof has disclosed that Super Eagles players bribed their way into the national team.
Speaking to supersport.com, Westerhof said, “We had cases where players paid money to the coach and said ‘I want to play for the national team’ and the coach would accept. They bought their way into the national team and it was an unbelievable situation. Very sad. I know these things,” an angry Westerhof said.
Westerhof was the national football team coach to the African Nations Cup winning side of 1994, and the helmsman who guided the team to their first ever World Cup in the USA in the same year. He stated further, "We had a situation where we had the wrong people in the wrong places, even in the (Nigeria) FA.". . . duhhh!
Before your brain starts moving ahead of me, I need to mention that he added: "My captain (Keshi) is there now and you can see the changes because he selects the right people."
It's no surprise that whenever a nations Cup competition comes up, all manner of personalities come crawling out of the woodworks, making one statement or the other, oblivious of how it makes them look. Westerhof was part of a setup; he functioned within it, saw its drawbacks, and when he left shortly after the 1994 World Cup, revelations like these were not heard.
It's not like he's saying anything we don't already know, but as someone who was an insider, perhaps blowing the whistle 20 years ago could've done our football some world of good.
Now the only thing this 'revelation' serves to do is question his integrity and role in the whole debacle.
