Goal-Line Tech. For 2014 World Cup

FIFA has finally caught up with the times by announcing they will use goal-line technology at the 2014 World Cup.

Football’s governing body has for long been criticised for the reluctance to use technology, but on Tuesday confirmed they have invited tenders to provide the system to be used in Brazil next year.

Hawkeye (for years already used in both cricket and tennis) and Goalref (which uses magnetic sensors) were tested at the Club World Cup and have FIFA approval.

“After a successful implementation of Goal-Line Technology (GLT) at the Club World Cup in Japan in December 2012, FIFA has decided to use GLT at the 2013 Confederations Cup in Brazil and the 2014 World Cup in Brazil,” a statement read.

“The aim is to use GLT in order to support the match officials and to install a system in all stadia, pending the successful installation, and pre-match referee tests.”

Phew!!! At last.
