Mrs. Yakowa For Deputy Governor!

The hue and cry for the elevation of the widow of the Late Kaduna State Governor, Mrs. Amina Yakowa to the position of Deputy Governor seems to have gained momentum following the underground moves being made by northern leaders and elders in this regard.

A delegation of monarchs and elders has already been drafted to meet with Vice President Namadi Sambo in the coming days to further drum support for the former first lady of Kaduna State. The meeting with the VP, according to our source, is borne out of the fact that Sambo is the most senior political office holder from Kaduna State and northern Nigeria in general, and that he will play a vital role in the drive to enthrone Mrs. Yakowa.

According to LEADERSHIP, the elders' forum, led by Zamani Lekwot and wife of the former late deputy governor of the state, Mrs. Charity Shekari, had early met with the Vice President Sambo to sell the idea to him.

They insisted that Mrs. Yakowa was southern Kaduna's choice for the vacant office of Deputy Governor, following the death of her husband, and the swearing in of the deputy governor as governor. This, they said was in honour of the man, Patrick Yakowa, who had done so much for the state.

A member of the Kaduna State Assembly, Hon. Esther Abba, who spoke to our correspondent on phone, applauded the decision of the elders, saying "Yakowa has done so much that we cannot afford to allow his legacy to go unnoticed."

It worries us when political offices can be 'handed' out to people in the name of 'honouring' an individual who has passed away. No one is touting the qualities of the woman for the position.

No one cares if she can indeed do the job, possibly because the position itself is nothing more than a dud post.

Still, we must refrain from handing sensitive political posts to people on sentimental grounds.

If she gets the position, good for her. . . However, that will not bring back her husband.
