On Sunday, Lionel Messi finally broke the all time record of most goals scored in a Calendar year with 86 goals, relinquishing Gerd Muller's 40-year record of 85 goals to the dusty history books.

The record was broken during FC Barcelona's game against Real Betis where the goal merchant scored Barcelona's only two goals to secure a 2-1 victory, equaling the record with his first goal at 85, and then going on to beat it with his second goal.

It had previously been feared that he would not be able to equal the record, let alone beat it, when he was injured in last week's Champions League match against Benfica.
