Gidi's National Sports Festival Ends. . . At Last!
The Teslim Balogun Stadium was the stage for the closing ceremony of the 18th National Sports Festival, tagged Eko 2012, which came to an end on Sunday amid fanfare, dance and drama, with Delta State emerging overall winner of the games.
Delta State came tops with 116 gold, 99 silver and 75 bronze medals to win the 20 million naira first prize for the overall champion of the sports festival. The defending champion of the festival, Rivers State, took 76 gold, 71 silver and 71 bronze medals to come second, while third place went to the host state, Lagos, with 64 gold, 47 silver and 71 bronze medals.
The next NSF will be hosted by Cross Rivers State, which has promised to outdo this year's host.
Gidi's hosting was fraught with hitches as Athletes complained of accommodation, communication and logistics problems. Scheduling was a mess, and sports journalists could not get accredited soon enough. Information flow about the events, rules and scheduling were very difficult to get, and the official website was not updated regularly enough.
Still, the show went on, and Gidi is beating its chest as having organized the best National Sports Festival ever.
Well. . . whatever makes them sleep at night.
One area though that everyone agrees the state did well in is in the live streaming of events on the site, and in the area of transportation.
. . . But with most of the events centralised within one location, transportation shouldn't pose too much of a hassle.
In the end, Cross River State won't have to do much to surpass the efforts of Lagos. . .
. . . Who're still busy giving themselves pats on the back as I write this.
