On TV Station's Shocking Obituary On Mandela
The angst, shock and outrage that greeted Tuesday's airing of the accidental obituary documentary of South Africa's former president Nelson Mandela continues to generate momentum. . .
The Universal Channel (shown on DStv channel 117), from Multichoice's DStv pay-TV cable network, had aired a programme 'Remembering Nelson Mandela', seemingly from an already prepared file on the global icon.
. . . Some people just can't wait for him to go.
The programme was to have been the obituary tribute to the great man, accidentally aired to millions of Multichoice's viewers.
Naturally, you can imagine the shock that greeted this programme (especially since the man is still alive), spurring millions to take to the social media to vent their displeasure at such a social faux pas.
Even though there have been latest concerns about his health last week, new reports from the hospital indicate that his condition is improving.
The network, understanding that it had made a monumental blunder, tendered an apology and expressed dismay at the technical error, noting that it was a glitch and not intentional, as was claimed in some quarters.
That's fine. . . Afterall, mistakes do happen. . . (even though this one is as weird as they come, I mean: How do you explain a glitch that airs the obituary of a still-living person on your TV network?). . .
Here's how. . .
The statement released by the Universal Networks International which programmes the Universal Channel on DStv reads in part: "Like any international broadcaster, Universal Networks holds obituaries ready for every major statesman in the world. . . "
I could go on and on and give the rest of the statement which houses the apology itself, but we already know they apologized, besides, that's not where I'm heading. The point is:
If you're a statesman. . . And you're still alive (duhh!). . . Then YOUR OBITUARY IS READY!!!
I mean, how sick is that?
When I took on the dream to become popular and become a notable statesman in the future, I knew it had its ups and downs, but this?
I didn't know it was gonna be this crazy.
I think I'll just stick to being an international media hound with tons of money, fast cars, houses I don't need, and loads of beautiful, vanity-driven, intellectually un-stimulating girls at my beck and call. . . Yeah, I think that'll work.
Hope they don't have obituaries ready for that category too. . .
