Jungle Justice For A Traditional Ruler
A community in Ogun State, Nigeria, yesterday unleashed mayhem on their traditional ruler, the Olofin of Adodo, Oba Lateef Akanni, beating him up, burning his palace while his wife and kids were still in the house.
But thankfully, no lives were lost. . . just some bruised egos, and a lot of equally bruised bodies.
What happened. . . ?
Well, according to reports by ThisDay, the community got fed up with the antics of the Oba, who they say, displayed gross wickedness and despotic tendencies towards residents.
They say he oftentimes batters people who refuse to prostrate or show obeisance or accolades to him.
Things got to a head when his motorcade ran into a commercial motorcyclist, knocking him down, and rather than attending to his needs, it was alleged that the driver was ordered by Akanni himself (who was in the convoy) to slap the motorcyclist. . .
. . . The guy of course retaliated.
The eyewitnesses stated that the traditional ruler, who was furious at the rider’s action, got down from the car and slapped the driver. The community members who witnessed the incident were said to have been furious and unleashed terror on the chief, his aide and driver.
The enraged youths who witnessed the incident therein unleashed their brand of terror on the Oba and his entourage, stripping him naked and taking their anger to his palace.
They burnt the palace with his wife and children still in the building. It was the timely intervention of the Commanding Officer, 192 Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Mohammed Ahmed, who stormed the palace with a retinue of soldiers and rescued the woman and her kids.
While we do not condone violent actions by anyone, it is pertinent to note that whenever violence and injustice are meted out to the people, their elastic limit is bound to be reached.
And on this occasion it did.
Oba Lateef Akanni is currently being treated in an undisclosed location for security reasons.
We wish him well. . .
