Sahara Reporters reports that the Deputy Governor of Ekiti State in Nigeria, Mrs Funmilayo Olayinka, is seriously sick with cancer.
The Deputy Governor has been diagnosed with breast cancer, with her prolonged absence from public engagements fueling rumours that she had passed away.
While the governor's office denied the rumours and stated that she is indeed alive, it failed to give details about her health status. Sahara Reporters then went to work, drilling several government sources, and in the end learned that she had been unable to attend public functions due to her ailing health.
This is what one of their sources said: "Her Excellency, the deputy governor, is suffering from cancer,” said one of our sources. He added, "We’re all praying God to heal her and make it possible for her to return fully to serving the state."
They disclosed that Mrs. Olayinka was receiving treatment at St. Nicholas Hospital in Lagos, but refused to reveal the stage of her cancer. They said they'd been warned by the governor not to discuss the deputy's health crisis. "The governor is in touch with her and with members of her family and is offering every possible form of assistance in addressing her cancer," the source stated.
What is it with our public officials concealing their health status? How come when they fall sick, they do everything to hide it from public eyes, making denials and doing everything within their power - and without - to ensure that such a status does not come out?
Are they ashamed of being sick?
Did they boast that they were going to remain free of sickness throughout the duration of their stay in office?
Do we even give a hoot?
How about this for a laugh. . . The governor of Ekiti State himself, Dr. Kayode Fayemi and his group were one of those who yelled to high heavens and criticized the Yar'Adua administration for concealing his health condition from the people, and keeping all in the dark about happenings there, yet. . .
He's the same one hiding his deputy's health challenges from the people.
Did I hear you say HYPOCRITES. . . anyone?
