Govt. Takes Lawan To Court
FINALLY - The Federal Government of Nigeria has filed a Seven-count charge against the former House of Reps Ad-hoc Committee Chairman on Fuel Subsidy, Farouk Lawan, and his alleged accomplice, Boniface Emenalo at a HIgh Court in Abuja.
The duo gained prominence sometime in April 2012, when while acting in their official duties as Chairman and Secretary of the House of Reps Ad-hoc Committee on the fuel sibsidy regime, conspired with each other to obtain $3 million from Mr. Femi Otedola, Chairman of Zenon Pretroleum and Gas Limited, as bribe to remove the name of his company from the list of those indicted in their report as companies who benefited from fuel subsidy payments without actually supplying fuel.
It caused public outrage and condemnation, with calls for Hon. Lawan to be arrrested. Of course, his once squeaky clean reputation in the House was tarnished, and his title of 'Mr. Integrity' was thrown into the waste bin.
Mr. Otedola's taped conversational evidence of the 'transaction' seemed to be all that was needed to bring the accused persons to justice, but inaction on the part of government to pursue the matter in line with President Jonathan's war on corruption led many to believe they were going to get away with it. . .
. . . Until now.
