Au d'Ivoire. . .

Afcon 2013 - Sunday Mba - Nigeria vs Cote D'Ivoire

Against all expectations. . . Including mine, the Nigerian Super Eagles beat the Ivorian National team at the African Cup of Nations, 2-1, to advance to the semi-finals of the competition.

The Nigerian team beat the heavy favourites, and mouth-running Ivorians in a well contested game, in which the Nigerians gave a good account of themselves.

They came out smoking in the game, surprising their fellow West African brothers, who probably expected them to lie down and take it like a dog. . .

. . . But no: Emmanuel Emenike shut their mouths with a powerful 25 -yard free kick, two minutes to half time to put the Eagles 1-0 up.

Cheik Tiote equalized for Ivory Coast shortly after the second half began when he was left unmarked for a header at the back post, but it was Sunday Mba's goal in the 78th minute that proved to be the winner.

Mba weaved through the Elephant's defense before firing from outside the area, sending two-time champions Nigeria to the semifinal.

The Eagles played like they'd never played before, and showed everyone watching a taste of the glory days when they played like the best in the world.

If you recall, Emmanuel Eboue had gone on Twitter to make all sorts of uncomplimentary remarks about the Nigerian team, and even about the country itself, raining so much abuse and insults, that at a point one began to wonder if it was personal, and if indeed this was THE Emmanuel Eboue the footballer, and not some imposter.

But it didn't matter: Spurned on by those insults and the lack of faith in their abilities, the Super Eagles beat the much fancied Ivorians, to ensure that the golden generation of Ivorian players like Didier Drogba, Kolo Toure, Yaya Toure, Emmanuel Eboue and others remained perennial under-achievers who would never, ever win the African Cup of Nations. . .

This was OUR goodbye gift to them. . .

Loud-mouthed, over-confident, little s**ts!

Serves them right.
