Police Frees Abducted Female Corps Members

The timely and dogged response of the Nigerian Police effected the release of four female National Youth Corps members who were abducted during the weekend in Rivers State.

The four ladies were kidnapped when hoodlums broke into a transit camp for corps members at Iriebe area of the state. They had stolen phones, laptops and other valuables belonging to corps members at the camp before disappearing with their hostages.

The Rivers State police Public Relations officer, Mr. Ben Ugwuegbulam said the police gave chase when they heard of the development, forcing the hoodlums to abandon their hostages at Oyigbo while they escaped into the bush.

It's good to know that the Nigerian Police can display such dedication to duty. One shudders to think what would have happened to these ladies had the criminals gotten away with their hostages, especially in this crazy period when men molest women and cause untold physical and mental torture on them.

But then the question of security comes in: Why weren't there enough security in the transit camp for the corpers? We live in perilous times, and parents fear for their children.

There have been debates about the necessity of the National Youth Service and if the government cannot provide adequate security for the corpers, then maybe it's time to wrap up the National Youth Service Scheme.
