Patience Jonathan To Light Christmas Tree
It seems Nigeria's First Lady, Dame Patience Goodluck Jonathan is fully recovered and back to excellent health, as she is scheduled to light the first ever Nigerian National Christmas Tree in Abuja, tomorrow.
The Nigerian National Christmas Tree (NNCT - sounds like a political party) was initiated by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) as a way of showcasing the Nigerian culture to the world.
They took their time though: Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony is a culture in many nations, and as such this concept is not novelty, and could've come sooner. But I guess it's better late than never.
The Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Minister of State for FCT, Oluyinka Akintunde offered that the Christmas tree is located at the Unity Fountain Park beside Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, is 20.9 metres high and designed in the national colours of green and white.
The statement on the tree lighting reads: "The Christmas time is traditionally recognised and celebrated as a season of peace, goodwill and hope across national boundaries. It also offers us a unique opportunity to reinforce this same message of love, unity, reconciliation and peaceful coexistence.
"It is consequently our anticipation that an annual lighting of the Nigerian National Christmas tree will play a similar unifying role for our people,"
It took a whole lot of killings, murders, bombings, assaults, kidnappings, rapes, lynchings and deaths for them to realize that a re-inforcing message of hope, peace and love is urgently needed in our nation.
We hope WE get the message, even though I'm not gonna hold my breath. If you consider that the occasion is going to be graced by members of the National Assembly, wives of governors, members of the Federal Executive Council, Chairmen of Area Council in the FCT and their wives, heads of ministries, departments and agencies of government, heads of secretariats, departments and agencies of the FCT administration, diplomatic corps and the media among others, you'll appreciate the political jamboree the event is going to be. . .
And not the fun, bring-your-family-along fiesta it's supposed to be.
When Rihanna lit the Christmas tree in the US, we didn't see a hoard of gun-totting, political security guards all over the friggin' place.
I dare you to bring YOUR family to Nigeria's Tree Lighting Event.
You and your family will NEVER remain the same again.
