Gidi Commuters in the Ikeja area were once again thrown into confusion and subjected to forced walking excercises yesterday when transport Tricycles, popularly called 'Keke Marwa' were taken off the road.
It was like the World Walk-a-thon event was on yesterday, as hundreds of commuters walked to their various offices in the Alausa Secretariat area of Lagos (The official seat of the Lagos Government, I might add).
The usual Tricycles which took commuters from the Ikeja Under Bridge area of Awolowo Way, Ikeja, were nowhere to be seen. Commuters were left stranded, and when it dawned on them that they were tricycle-less, they began the long trek to their offices in Alausa.
When quizzed, the Tricycle operators claimed that the Lagos State Government had issued a directive pulling them off the route.
Prior to the emergence of the Tricycles on the route en mass, the 'Okada' motorcycles had held sway. . . until the Gidi government decided they were death traps riding on two wheels.
And rightly so. . . *Drumbeats* Enter Keke Marwa to the rescue!
Or so we thought. The Gidi government is hell bent on helping Lagosians lose weight. . . by hook or by crook.
There are even unconfirmed rumours going round that all Keke Marwa operators are going on strike as a result of government's action.
Well, we wish them well, as we wait to hear the official reason for removing them from the Awolowo Way-Alausa Secretariat route.
