Incredible! 6 Ph.D & 704 Masters Holders Among Applicants For Drivers Job In Dangote.

It’s been revealed that 6 Ph.D and 704 Masters Holders were among applicants vying for the position of drivers in a recent application sent out by Dangote Group. This number was cut from a sum consisting of 13, 000 higher degree and first degree holders. The position was for Graduate Executive Drivers, but it seems these Masters and Ph.D holders felt their paper qualification on its own wasn’t good enough to put food on the table.

Chairman of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, speaking at the mentorship meeting of the World Bank Youth Forun, said the organization only needed 100 drivers, but was overwhelmed by the deluge of applications. He said that the applicants were from reputable universities and had the needed quality. According to him, “All these things are verifiable, and they all graduated from reputable institutions, which is satisfactory and our plan is to eventually make them self dependent.”

That’s good. That’s very good. What keeps my brain cells in a constant state of flux is that government officials are always quick to say that the economy is growing. I say; if the economy is indeed growing, then why are Ph.D and Masters holders vying with first degree holders for positions as drivers? It all just seems so. . . unreal! Like I’m watching a very bad horror movie in which I’m a cast member. If anyone wishes to apply for any kind of job, I wouldn’t begrudge him or her, as long as it puts food on the table. If driving jobs have become a target for Ph.D holders, then Ph.D and Masters degrees might soon lose their attraction, as we all know that college degrees are sought majorly for the quality of job they can attract in the labour market.

Food for thought: One day, when  policemen stop a truck driver on the highway and asks for his papers, he might produce his Masters degree qualifications together with driver’s license and vehicle registration!
