At the 1994 Football World Cup in the United States, it was the quarter final match between Brazil and Holland, and it was 1-1. Then Bebeto scores a goal, firing Brazil 2-1 ahead. He runs over to the sideline and celebrates the goal with teammates Romario and Mazinho. Coming off the recent birth of his son, Matheus, he celebrates the goal with that now-famous cradle-rocking mime, which was to become one of the highlights of that year's World Cup. The boy whose birth inspired that unique celebration is all grown up now and doing daddy proud.
Now, 17 years later in 2011, young Matheus signs with Brazilian side Flamenco, a side his father, Bebeto played for. This year, at 18, he follows up with a call-up from the Brazilian U-20 side.
Presently, we're talking about Messi's little son, Thiago, being signed on by Argentinian club, Newell, Messi's old boyhood club.
Is there something to be said about football stars' children, and the footballing gene running riot in their system? Is the craze to sign on football stars' sons just that - a craze, a simple marketing/PR gimick, which will simply fizzle out, or is there more to it?
Fact is, Matheus is doing excellently well. . . perhaps Newell's investment in little Thiago has more substance in it than we think.
