How far would you go for your daughter? That's the question that's being answered by 58 year old Cathy Donnelly who is 6 months pregnant. . . for her daughter!
Mrs. Donnelly will have her seventh grandchild, all for her daughter, Shannon Fischer. Mrs. Fischer and her husband Jamie have been unable to concieve for two years owing to scarring in her uterus. When this was discovered, her mother, Cathy offered to be surrogate mother for her daughter's child. . . isn't that sweet?!
Mrs. Donnelly said, "I felt bad for them - I just thought what's nine months of my life? They are going to have a child for the rest of theirs. It's not like I'm busy doing anything." As endearing as this might be, there are health risks involved. Michael Murray, specialist at the Northern California Fertility Medical Center, says though there have been cases of mothers acting as surrogate for their daughters before it is typically something the medical community does not advise. Usually it’s a close friend or a sister that acts as the gestational carrier – women who are over 45-years-old are not normally in good enough health. Pregnancy for older women is much riskier. The most common complications are high blood pressure, gestational diabetes and premature child birth."
Mrs. Donnelly understood the risks involved, and was willing to go ahead with the procedure. Now that it's starting to show, the family is beginning to appreciate the ramifications. To carry a pregancy for someone for nine months is no joke; and to flirt with possible health complications is something most people would never contemplate.
Is this a display of selfless love, or mindless foolhardy. . . you tell me.
