Cocaine Granny Loses Appeal

British grandmother sentenced to death in Bali for trafficking cocaine has lost her appeal, and now has only 14 days to appeal at the Supreme Court.

Lindsay June Sandiford is seen at a news conference at the Customs Office at Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali

As reported on this blog, 56 year old Lindsay Sandiford was sentenced to death in January for trafficking drugs, and her punishment caused an uproar which reverberated round the world, but the Indonesian government didn't care, as they went ahead to uphold the judgement.

Now Sandiford has just 14 days to appeal, as she stares death right in the bare ugly face.

The appeal she made was rejected, with the Bali High Court ruling that the original punishment was "accurate and correct", and confirmed it with a gun barrel's snout.

Should her appeal at the Supreme Court fail, she has the option of seeking a judicial review of the decision from the Supreme Court. . . If that fails, then her only grasp for life would then lie in the hands of the president as only he can grant her a pardon/reprieve. . .

. . . Fat chance of that happening.

Her travails started when she was arrested in May 2012 at the Bali airport with drugs worth 1.6 million pounds in her luggage.

Despite her cooperation with the authorities (which led to further arrests), and her plea that she had been forced to smuggle the drugs from Thailand by a criminal gang and that the safety of her children was at risk. . .

. . . She bagged the death penalty!

We watch and wait for events as they unfold, and to see whether the Indonesian government will finally yield to clamours for the commutal of her sentence.
